UAE history dates back thousands of years — from the Magan civilization, Portuguese, British, to the modern Union 1971.

Ancient Civilization (3000 BC)

Magan civilization (3000 BC) — copper trade with Mesopotamia. Abu Dhabi was an important caravan route.

Islam and Middle Ages (630-1500)

Islam arrived ~630 AD. UAE became part of Islamic Empire. Pearl trade flourished.

Portuguese Era and Regional (1507-1820)

Portuguese controlled the Gulf coast 1507 — for 150 years. Then Omanis and Qawasim.

Trucial States (1820-1971)

Britain imposed peace treaties 1820, 1853, 1892 — UAE became British protectorate ("Trucial States"). 7 sheikhs ruled their territories.

Oil Discovery (1958-1971)

Oil discovered in Abu Dhabi 1958 — changed everything. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (1966) unified vision.

Union (1971)

December 2, 1971 — United Arab Emirates founded from 7 emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah. Sheikh Zayed first president.

Modern UAE (1971-today)

10 million inhabitants (88% foreigners). Massive growth: Burj Khalifa, Palm Jumeirah, Expo 2020 Dubai. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed president since 2022. Economic diversification — tourism, finance, aviation (Emirates, Etihad), space (Hope Probe to Mars 2020).
